The
German American American Cultural Center is located
at 519 Huey P. Long Avenue in the heart of Gretna's
National Register Historic District, settled by Germans
in the mid-1800's.
The
Center interprets the unique German immigrant contribution
to Louisiana's history through exhibits, lectures, programs
and other educational activities. The Center is a 501-C3
non-profit organization that helps develop tourism in
the City of Gretna, and on the Westbank of Jefferson
Parish through its permanent and rotating museum exhibits.
Exhibits, which were built by the National Park Service,
depict the colonial experience, immigration, world of
work, culture and religion. An additional exhibit panel
features "culture in crisis", during the two
world wars.
The
friends of the GACC worked with the Jean Lafitte National
Historical Park and Preserve, Jefferson Parish and the
City of Gretna to establish this unique cultural/interpretative
Center in the City of Gretna. The funds raised from
the Gretna Bingo Palace are used to support the operations
of the GACC.
