The
German
American
American
Cultural
Center is
located at
519 Huey P.
Long Avenue
in the heart
of Gretna's
National
Register
Historic
District,
settled by
Germans in
the
mid-1800's.
The Center
interprets
the unique
German
immigrant
contribution
to
Louisiana's
history
through
exhibits,
lectures,
programs and
other
educational
activities.
The Center
is a 501-C3
non-profit
organization
that helps
develop
tourism in
the City of
Gretna, and
on the
Westbank of
Jefferson
Parish
through its
permanent
and rotating
museum
exhibits.
Exhibits,
which were
built by the
National
Park
Service,
depict the
colonial
experience,
immigration,
world of
work,
culture and
religion. An
additional
exhibit
panel
features
"culture in
crisis",
during the
two world
wars.
The friends
of the GACC
worked with
the Jean
Lafitte
National
Historical
Park and
Preserve,
Jefferson
Parish and
the City of
Gretna to
establish
this unique
cultural/interpretative
Center in
the City of
Gretna. The
funds raised
from the
Gretna Bingo
Palace are
used to
support the
operations
of the GACC.
